TheWrap won awards for best online news reporting for its coverage of the Mel Gibson-Joe Eszterhas controversy and for best entertainment column
TheWrap won top awards at the 2012 National Entertainment Journalism Awards on Sunday, for best online news reporting for its coverage of the Mel Gibson-Joe Eszterhas controversy and for best entertainment column.
TheWrap won best news reporting for its coverage of screenwriter Eszterhas accusing the already-controversial Gibson of making anti-Semitic remarks and threatening violence against his ex-wife.
In recognizing the story titled “Mel Gibson Vs. Joe Eszterhas on Maccabee Movie” the judges commented: “Sharon Waxman's objective investigative piece on the Mel Gibson- Joe Eszterhas tiff over the Maccabee script earns her kudos for effective online reporting.”
Second prize went to Michael White & Ronald Grover, for their story at Bloomberg News, “Lions Gate Acquires Summit Entertainment for $412.5 Million.”
It was the second win in the news category since the launch of TheWrap in 2009.
This column, WaxWord, also won the top honor for Best Entertainment Blog, with the judges remarking, “Sharon Waxman's contemplative and insightful blogs about media subjects, such as Andrew Breitbart and the Kony viral video, are compelling and superior to the many others writing about the always fascinating entertainment industry.”
Second prize went to actor-blogger James Franco, for his movie blog on the Huffington Post.
Brent Lang won third prize in the category of Best Commentary for his article, “Why Television, Not Film, Is Driving Profits at Major Media Companies.”
TheWrap came in second as best Entertainment Website, behind the Hollywood Reporter.
We are thrilled at this recognition for our hard work and hope to continue serving our audience with the best in news and analysis of the entertainment industry.
