Buyouts. Layoffs. Salary freezes. It was rough year for New York Times staffers in 2009.  Less so, at least financially, for the company’s top executives, according to documents filed with the SEC on Friday.

Of the Times Co. executives referred to by name in the filing, president and CEO Janet Robinson – at $6,262,755 in total compensation -- earned the most in 2009. (And this, despite taking a 5 percent reduction in base salary for all executive officers from April through December.)

That’s more than Arthur “Pinch” Sulzberger, whose total compensation in 2009 was $5,986,738. Vice chairman Michael Golden earned $2,400,841, while CFO Jim Follo took $1,297,269 in 2009, according to the filing.

In fact, for those mentioned, their total compensation actually increased over 2008.
