Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller Get Sundance Buzz for Teen Spirit in 'The Spectacular Now'
January, 19, 2013 6:49 am | Comments On #Austenland, James Ponsoldt, Jennifer Coolidge, Jerusha Hess, Keri Russell, Miles Teller, Movies, Shailene Woodley, Sundance Film Festival, Sundance2013, The Spectacular NowAs day two of Sundance passed, plenty of films have picked up good buzz, but nothing has hit with the force that "Beasts of the Southern Wild" did on the second day last year.
Instead, festival-goers were left talking about the pleasures of the narrative films like the mountain-climbing adventure "The Summit" and documentaries like "After Tiller" and "The World According to Dick Cheney."
"Austenland," a comedy from Jerusha Hess (making her directorial debut after writing "Napoleon Dynamite"), certainly proved to be a crowd-pleaser at the Eccles Theatre in the early afternoon, with Keri Russell as a single woman so obsessed with the world of...
Sex, Murder and Daniel Radcliffe in 'Kill Your Darlings' at Sundance
January, 18, 2013 7:17 pm | Comments On #Dane DeHaan, Daniel Radcliffe, festivals, Kill Your Darlings, Movies, Sundance, Sundance2013
“Kill Your Darlings,” the little-known story of murder and literary giants Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and their friend Lucien Carr, premiered to a packed theater at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday -- and not just because Daniel Radcliffe (as Ginsberg) has a very explicit sex scene with Dane DeHaan (as Carr).
But that scene -- nude, passionate and extremely graphic -- is undoubtedly something that will be much talked about as a daring new frontier for the actor formerly known as Harry Potter. (Update on that very point: I've been informed that the sex scene is with someone who only looks like Carr but is in fact someone else...

Unable to pay their rent, the two move in separately with a nephew's family and a pair of gay cops.
"Forty Shades of Blue" director Sachs called "Love is Strange" his "first pure love story."
“In the wake of the personal events depicted in [his 2012 film]...

RADiUS-TWC said Friday that it has acquired North American rights to "Twenty Feet From Stardom," which premiered to an enthusiastic reception at the Sundance Film Festival this week.
The film examines half a dozen of the greatest back-up singers in rock history; artists who have provided the texture and dynamism to some of the biggest hits in music history. Yet, many of them have labored in obscurity, singing their hearts out behind the likes of The Rolling Stones, Bette Midler and Bruce Springsteen...at least until now.
Produced by the late A&M Records executive Gil Friesen and directed by Grammy...

The documentary offers a penetrating look at life in Georgia -- the former member of communist Russia, and not the home of Atlanta. It is making its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this week and competing for the world documentary prize.
Directed by the young Georgian filmmaker Tinatin Gurchiani, the film tracks her search for young adults in her native land, aged 15-23, in order to make a film about growing up in the Eurasian country. Her goal is to try to make sense of a region and a land that has yet to fully shake off its Soviet past.

The first film to screen at this year's Sundance Film Festival was a documentary -- director Mark Silver's and producer Gael Garcia Bernal's "Who Is Dayani Cristal?"
Screening off the beaten track at the Marc Theatre in the late afternoon, it may not have had a glamorous opening night vibe of "Crystal Fairy," which was unveiled three hours later at the larger Eccles Theatre -- but it officially kicked off a frigid Sundance 2013, and nobody who knows Sundance could argue that a non-fiction film shouldn't have gotten the leadoff spot.
For all of its reputation as a dealmakers' mecca and a launching pad for indies like the current Best Picture...

Thanks to Richard Gere and the financial crisis, the Sundance Film Festival is returning to its indie roots this year.
The festival, which starts Thursday, has long served as a launching pad for smaller movies, as it did last year in catapulting “Beasts of the Southern Wild” to four Oscar nominations. However, as the festival has grown in stature, it also has craved big-ticket movies with brand-name stars, from John Wells' "The Company Men" (Ben Affleck and a reported $15 million budget) to Antoine Fuqua's "Brooklyn's Finest" (Richard Gere and a $17 million budget).
“At previous Sundances, there was a real effort to try and have very high-profile...
