Tribeca Documentaries Examine Reagan Legacy, Evolution Wars
April, 22, 2012 8:13 am | Comments On #Antonino D'Ambrosio, film festivals, independent film, indies, Let Fury Have the Hour, Movies, Scott Thurman, The Revisionaries, tom morello, tribeca film festivalIt's a general rule of film festivals, and one that has long applied to Tribeca: If you want to increase your chances of seeing good movies, go to the documentaries.
Last year, the Tribeca Film Festival presented a pair of docs that are now making waves in theaters, "Bully" (which TFF showed under the title "The Bully Project") and "Jiro Dreams of Sushi." Among the notable entries in this year's crop are "Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Story," "Searching for Sugar Man," "Booker's Place: A Mississippi Story" and "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey."

Buyers, meanwhile, talked appreciatively about a handful of films, including documentaries about Morton Downey Jr. and an aspiring Filipino rock star who became the new lead singer of Journey after posting a video on YouTube.

Tribeca Drama 'First Winter' Draws Fire for Killing Deer
April, 19, 2012 11:06 pm | Comments On #Benjamin Dickinson, film festivals, First Winter, Movies, tribeca film festivalAs the Tribeca Film Festival moved into its first full day of screenings on Thursday, it didn't take long for one of the festival's most buzzed-about films to also become one of its most controversial.
"First Winter," an apocalyptic drama from first-time director Benjamin Dickinson, had its world premiere on Thursday night at the AMC Loews Village 7, where it was received enthusiastically by a friendly crowd.
But the premiere came as news broke that the filmmakers behind one of the festival's most eagerly awaited films had illegally killed two deer while making the movie.
They did so while shooting the scene that drew the biggest audience reaction at the...

April, 19, 2012 2:18 pm | Comments On #Deal Central, judd apatow, Midnight Run, Movies, people, robert de niro, sequelRobert De Niro is working on a sequel to the 1988 hit comedy “Midnight Run,” the actor revealed at a panel Thursday at the Tribeca Film Festival to honor Universal Studios 100th anniversary.
The follow-up would see him helping out the son of the embezzling accountant played by Charles Grodin in the first film. The script is still in development, De Niro said.
Though the thought of returning to “Midnight Run” after more than two decades might seem like sacrilege to fans of the first film, there’s plenty of other reasons for the Criterion Collection set to be feeling antsy.

His newest movie, the likable but overstuffed "The Five-Year Engagement," opened the 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival in Manhattan last night.
Apatow (“Funny People”) is a producer on the romantic comedy, which at its bawdiest features nothing more shocking than star Jason Segel’s naked backside and a twosome amorously smearing each other with potato salad.

The film, which opens nationally April 27, stars Segel and Emily Blunt. They play an engaged couple that keeps encountering obstacles that push back their wedding plans.

April, 18, 2012 9:54 am | Comments On #economic downturn, Movies, TribecaThe economy may still be sputtering, but don't expect the recession to take center stage at the Tribeca Film Festival.
There will be no searing indictments of the banking and trading industry unspooling just blocks away from Wall Street this year. But that doesn't mean that stories of financial hardship will be wholly absent, the festival's programming team said at a kick-off breakfast Wednesday at the 92YTribeca.
The 12-day festival of films and shorts opens Wednesday night with "The Five-Year Engagement."
"The economy is there, but it's really in the fabric of these films," Genna Terranova, Tribeca's director of programming, said.

April, 17, 2012 7:09 pm | Comments On #Abbie Cornish, Cheerful Weather for the Wedding, Chris Colfer, film festivals, First Winter, James Franco, Movies, Struck by Lightning, The Avengers, The Five-Year Engagement, The Girl, tribeca film festival, YossiThe lineup ranges from the blockbusterific spectacle of "The Avengers" to something called "The Fourth Dimension," three short films that include what is reportedly a strange performance by Val Kilmer as a motivational speaker named, um, "Val Kilmer."
Indeed, the Tribeca Film Festival, which opens on Wednesday night for a 12-day run in lower Manhattan, is a festival without a cohesive personality.
And that's just fine with Tribeca.
"You know what makes a festival good?" asked Geoffrey Gilmore, the chief creative officer of Tribeca Enterprises. "Showing good films."
