Screen Daily is going behind a pay wall.

Editor Mike Goodridge announced the “subscription barrier” on Wednesday, according to Anne Thompson, who spotted the news buried in a digital edition of Screen International’s Berlin Film Festival daily.

Goodridge says the switch – which will affect the bulk of Screen Daily’s online content -- will be made on February 25.

The move to an online subscription model follows in the footsteps of Variety.com, which put most of its content behind a pay wall in December.

“In today’s 24/7 global media environment, we know how indispensable our website has become,” Goodridge wrote. “The number of people who have registered for our daily newsletters and breaking news also shows how big a part our daily online service plays in the industry.”

He added: “We think it’s right as we develop [new] services, we provide them exclusively for the benefit of our paying customers.”
