‘Men in Black 3’ Powers to $202M at Worldwide Box Office

Sony's sequel "MIB3" takes $19M from both Russia and China. It's at $55M and leading the U.S. box office, too

The agents of "Men in Black 3" save the world from aliens, and the world may be returning the favor for the Sony sequel.

The Will Smith comedy was at $202 million at the worldwide box office Sunday, after opening No. 1 in 104 foreign countries. That includes $19 million from both China and Russia.

It will finish the Memorial Day weekend on top in the U.S. too.

"MIB3" took in $19.4 million Saturday, up 8 percent from Friday's $17.9 million. As of Sunday, it had taken in $55 million, which puts it on pace for a four-day haul in the $70 million range and will make it the best-opening film in the franchise.

The original "MIB," which bowed in 2002, took in $51 million in its three-day opening weekend and "MIB2" did $52 million. Sony expects another $17.6 million Sunday and $15 million from "MIB3" Monday.

The numbers are good news for Will Smith too. His return to the big screen for the first time in four years stands as his third-biggest opening, behind "I Am Legend" ($77M) and "Hancock" ($62M).

The international numbers were buoyed by IMAX sales, which contributed about $12 million to the film's worldwide total.

Disney's "The Avengers" will be No. 2 this weekend. Its has a three-day take of $37 million, and is on pace for a four-day haul of $47 million. It crossed the $500M threshold in its 23rd day of release Saturday, easily beating the previous record of 32 days held by Avatar.

The Marvel superhero saga added another $26 million globally and passed "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" to move into the No. 5 spot on the all-time international grosses list with $781 million. Its worldwide cume is now $1.2 billion.

Universal's 'Battleship" is sitting at No. 3 for the weekend with $10.7 million over the three days. Paramount's "The Dictator" is next with $9.6 million and "Chernobyl Diaries" from Warner Bros. is next with $8 million.
