Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges Are Very Serious Enemies in ‘The Giver’ Trailer (Video)

The first look at the adaptation of the classic Lois Lowry book reveals a grave dystopia and seriously gray stars

Another day, another dystopian teen novel adaptation.

(To be fair, this one may be a little different.)

Here’s the first look at The Weinstein Company’s big screen version of Lois Lowry‘s seminal think-for-yourself novel, “The Giver,” which for the last 20 years has been celebrated as one of the best books for emerging young adults. A winner of the Newbury Medal back when it was published, it took this long line of YA adaptations (and lots of legwork from star/producer Jeff Bridges) to get its time in the Hollywood limelight, but given the cast, the wait may have been worth it.

As has become custom with these sorts of movies, a young newcomer — in this case, Brandon Thwaites — plays the brave lead, who is the world’s only hope in a society that has been dimmed by mind control and other devious means. And, once again, the young gun is acting amongst major stars; here, they don’t get much brighter, with Bridges (good guy) and Meryl Streep (baddie) bookending the talented kid.

The film, directed by Phillip Noyce, is due out in August.
