MGM, Fox 2000 Teaming Up for ‘Poltergeist’ Remake

Sam Raimi will produce the Gil Kenan film

One of cinema's most famous haunted houses is ba-aaack.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has partnered with Fox 2000 Pictures to co-finance and distribute a remake of “Poltergeist."

The update of the 1982 horror classic will be produced by Sam Raimi and directed by Gil Kenan (“Monster House”).

David Lindsay-Abaire, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who teamed with Raimi on  “Oz: The Great and Powerful," is crafting the screenplay.

"Poltergeist" continues MGM's push to remake films from its library — it is already updating "RoboCop" and "Carrie."

The new take on "Poltergeist" will center on a cash-strapped family that relocates to an outdated suburban home only to be confronted with an angry spirit. The spectral menace kidnaps their youngest daughter, setting the plot in motion.

“Poltergeist” will be marketed and distributed worldwide by Fox, with select international territories as well as international television distribution being handled by MGM. Fox will also handle home entertainment and domestic television.

“Poltergeist” is scheduled to begin production this fall.
