Michael Hastings to Receive Norman Mailer Award

Maya Angelou and Junot Diaz also honored

Michael Hastings, the BuzzFeed and Rolling Stone journalist who was killed in a June car accident, will receive the Norman Mailer Award for Emerging Journalist from the Norman Mailer Center, the center announced on Thursday.

Maya Angelou and Junot Diaz also will be honored at the center’s annual benefit on Oct. 17.

Diaz, whose “The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” won the 2008 Pultizer for fiction, will receive the Mailer Prize for Distinguished Writing. Angelou will be given the Mailer Lifetime Achievement award.

Rolling Stone editor Will Dana will present the award to Hastings, whose career was cut short in June when his car crashed into a tree in Los Angeles. His 2010 Rolling Stone article “The Runaway General” led to the resignation of Gen. Stanley McChrystal. He wrote a book based on that reporting, “The Operators,” as well as two others.
