What do two of the most controversial characters in politics and pop culture have in common? They both love twerking.

Miley Cyrus has revealed that while many people bashed her racy 2013 MTV VMA performance during Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines,” GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump was a fan.

The “Wrecking Ball” singer was alerted to her new supporter by none other than Kanye West, whom she was recording with in the studio the next day, Cyrus told The New York Times in a new interview Thursday.

“He was like, ‘Whoa.’ He called and said, ‘Turn on your TV.’ I was staying at the Trump Hotel and Donald Trump literally called and said, basically, ‘I know everyone’s talking about it, but I loved it,’” she said. “I had no idea anyone was talking about it yet.”

Of course, soon everyone was talking about it, and not all of it was good.

“Even people around me really judged me. People that I really loved and thought were my friends judged me for it,” Cyrus revealed. “They were like, ‘You were on drugs when you did that performance.’ I did nothing! I still don’t get it.”

As for the longterm aftermath of her near-naked, butt-waving routine, the singer told the Times: “Dude, it was insane. I became that girl — I was the face of twerking, which didn’t really matter. That wasn’t what it was about.”

With Cyrus hosting the 2015 MTV VMAs on Sunday and Nicki Minaj opening the show, viewers are expecting some equally outrageous performances that will hopefully get Trump fired up again.

Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Pharrell Williams, Demi Lovato, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Tori Kelly, A$AP Rocky and Twenty One Pilots are also scheduled to perform.
The VMAs will air Sunday on MTV at 9 p.m.
