‘Minions’ Fans Go Crazy With ‘Despicable Me’ Spin-Off Themed Weddings, Tic Tacs, Shoes

The yellow pill-shaped helpers have even taken over a hotel suite in Orlando, Florida

Even before Universal Studios announced they would be releasing a “Despicable Me” spin-off titled “Minions,” people went bananas for Gru’s little helpers.

Some fans take it to extremes, however, with one couple even decking out their wedding in a Minion theme, while others have made elaborate yellow cakes dedicated to the kookie characters. There’s a Minion-themed hotel suite at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando, Florida, and Minion Tic Tacs selling for almost $400.

In light of the “Minions” premiere on July 10, TheWrap takes a look at some of the most bizarre and elaborate creations, accessories and paraphernalia.

1. Minion-themed wedding

Sam Finan and Bob Thomas tied the knot at the Chequers Hotel in Cumbria, England, this week — and because both had been married before — they wanted to do try a unique theme.

“At first it was just going to be the cake. Then it was cuff links. Then the place cards. It has got a little out of hand,” Thomas said, according to the BBC.

2. Minion Tic Tacs

Yellow Tic Tacs with faces of Stuart, Kevin and Bob have been making the rounds for a while, but one eBay seller is auctioning off 96 containers and a store display for a whopping $399.

3. Sandra Bullock‘s “Minions” Premiere Shoes Selling for $800 to $1400

Sandra Bullock wore minion-inspired custom-made Rupert Sanderson pumps to the premiere of the film on June 27. There are 10 pairs, all signed by Bullock, that are being auctioned off on charitybuzz.com, with proceeds benefiting Art Practice, a nonprofit organization supporting foster youth.

A fan in the United Kingdom is selling a pair for $1,396 on eBay.

4. A LEGO Minion Sculpture 

Someone took it upon themselves to build a Minions LEGO sculpture, and now, he is selling the “display piece” for $1,492 dollars, including $160 dollars in shipping for the fragile piece.

5. Minions-inspired hotel suite 

The Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando, Florida, offers a newly-renovated suite, capturing the essence of Gru’s laboratory. A standard king bedroom is attached to the kid’s suite, making it an entire suite of 650-675 square feet. The children sleep like Margo, Edith and Agnes in a custom-designed missile bed with Minion bedding.

6. Party cake-pop set for $199

If you’re in the mood to spend almost $200 for Minion cake pops with $36 shipping, then eBay is the place to go.

7. Vans and Converse Minion-inspired sneakers

Even popular shoe makers know that the Minions are a hit — that’s why they decided to put them on everybody’s feet. Both companies kept their signature shape, but Vans made one purple shoe and one yellow shoe showcasing Carl. Converse, on the other hand, went less drastic, which just a few Minions on the side of the high-top.

8. Minion Glass Pipe

Though not sponsored or distributed by Universal itself, a fan decided to make a Minions-inspired glass pipe, selling for $50. It seems to resemble Carl.

9. Minions Edible Massage Oil

A fan on Etsy is selling handmade edible massage oil in Minions theme in Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Banana! flavor. There are also bath salts and shower gels for sale.

10. The most elaborate fan cakes

Inarguably, Minions fans make the most elaborate and fun cakes. Whether they are in Minion shapes, layer cakes with marzipan Minions on top or Minion cupcakes, fans definitely put a lot of time and effort into their creations. There are various recipes out there, but various bakeries in Los Angeles sell them as well, such as Sugar Babies in Sherman Oaks.
