Though many Hollywood powerhouses, including James Cameron, Jeffrey Katzenberg and John Lasseter, are backing the advent of 3-D filmmaking, the initiative could prove to be the movie industry's latest misstep, says the New York Times.  While studios may have embraced the technology -- the Walt Disney Company has 15 three-dimensional movies planned, while Twentieth Century Fox is putting approximately $200 million into Cameron's 3-D sci-fi epic "Avatar" -- movie theaters have yet to make the expensive upgrades to projection equipment at the multiplex. As a result, only 1,300 of North America's 40,000 movie screens currently support digital 3-D, and studios require about 3,000 screens for most new releases.
