“Inglourious Basterds” invaded the world over the weekend, grossing a leading $27.5 million from 2,630 locations in 22 markets, according to studio estimates.
It marked the biggest opening ever for a Tarantino film. His biggest hit overseas was "Pulp Fiction," having grossed $101.9 million, while his last film, 2007’s “Death Proof,” grossed less than $30 million internationally.
"Basterds," distributed by Universal overseas, landed in the No. 1 spot in the U.K. with $5.8 million. In France, “Basterds” lead the charge with $6.1, and in Germany it won the crown with $4.3 million. It was also the top film in Australia, with $2.7 million. In total, it lead 12 different markets.
“Basterds” will be rolling out through the fall, culminating in a Japanese release in December. Next weekend includes opening in Argentina and Denmark.
The reigning international champion, Paramount’s “G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra,” grossed $14 million from 51 territories. Its foreign total stands at $118 million.
