Not that moviegoers were panting for it, but Judge Dredd will return to theaters on Sept. 21, 2012, Lionsgate announced on Thursday.
The original comic book adaptation was a huge flop when it premiered in the summer of 1995 with Sylvester Stallone in the title role.
By hewing more faithfully to the source material and abbreviating the name to "Dredd," the upcoming incarnation is hoping to catch fire with audiences.
"Dredd" stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey. Pete Travis ("Vantage Point") directs.
Lionsgate is releasing the movie in 3D.
