The fifth "Die Hard" movie is No. 1 in 32 of the 37 markets in which it debuted
"Good Day to Die Hard" exploded for $61 million at the overseas box office and the top spot in 32 of the 37 markets in which it opened, Fox reported Sunday. That easily exceeded the $25 million it brought in as the No. 1 film in North America over the weekend. It was in 63 markets in all, in nearly 9,600 theaters.
As John McClane, Bruce Willis battles Soviet terrorists in Moscow in this the fifth entry in the "Die Hard" series, and Fox made the most of its Russian connection at the box office. The action film brought in $6.7 million there, behind only the U.K. ($7.6 million) and Japan ($6.8 million). Germany ($6.4 million) and Mexico ($3.2 million) helped lift the international total after two weeks for "Good Day to Die Hard" to $80 million. It opened in seven Asian markets last weekend and took in $10.4 millon.
Starting with the original film in 1988, which made $148 million worldwide, each successive “Die Hard” movie has made more money than the last at the global box office. The previous entry, “Live Free or Die Hard,” made $383 million in 2007. In all, the franchise has taken in $1.13 billion globally.
Elsewhere, "Django Unchained" brought in another $13.7 million for foreign distributor Sony, upping its international total to $208.6 million. With its $156.9 million domestic haul, the worldwide total for Quentin Tarantino's slave saga is now $365.5 million.
Universal's "Les Miserables" opened in several Latin American countries and added $10 million from 48 markets. That gives the star-studded musical an international total of $233 million; combined with its domestic gross, the worldwide total is now at $379 million.
