Tom Shadyac's "I AM," the "Ace Ventura" director's personal tale of recovery after a debilitating cycling accident, will be released early next year by Paladin, industry vet Mark Urman's distribution company.

This is Shadyac's first non-fiction film after a career in comedy, with "Ace Ventura," "Liar, Liar" and "Bruce Almighty" to his credit.

tom shadyac"I AM" is the first-person account of Shadyac's post-accident recovery process, during which he sold his house and moved into a mobile home. Accompanied by a camera crew, Shadyac met with people such as Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Paladin's Urman said, "Because Tom, first and foremost, is a terrific entertainer, the film is also great fun, and I have no doubt that 'I AM' will be as popular in its own way as anything Tom has done before."

All proceeds derived from the release will go to Shadyac's non-for-profit organization, The Foundation for I AM, which funds various causes.
