Sony Pictures announced Thursday that it has surpassed $2 billion in foreign ticket sales this year, a first for the studio, while also setting an all time mark in 2009 for global box office with $3.357 billion.

The $2 billion international milestone has only been hit five times in motion picture history, with Fox doing it last in 2006.

Globally, with one month left in 2009, Sony has already passed its previous all-time annual mark of $3.334 billion.

Sony still has more receipts coming from Roland Emmerich disaster film “2012,” which is closing in on $600 million globally. Also tabulated in 2009 will be the Dec. 18 opening of romantic comedy “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” which stars Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker.

"Even in the midst of an economy that continues to challenge our industry, this has been a tremendous year in just about every way we can imagine,” said Jeff Blake, chairman of Sony Pictures Worldwide marketing and distribution.
