Unlike previous "Star Trek" films, the latest version from director J.J. Abrams was a box office force, grossing $36 million in 54 markets on 5,000 screens.

None of the previous "Star Trek" movies ever found much international success; the latest rendition has already earned more than the final gross of the last film, "Nemesis," in 2002.

"Star Trek" easily topped the second week of Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which dropped almost 60% from its debut weekend.

"Wolverine" has already grossed $124 million overseas. 2000's "X-Men" tallied $140 milion overseas in 2000. "X2: X-Men United" grossed $192 million internationally in 2003, and "X-Men: the Last Stand" grossed $600 internationally in 2006.

The U.K. was the biggest "Trek" tracker, with $8.8 million. Germany scored the second highest number with $4.6 milion.

Japan and China will open next weekend, and Mexico's delayed launch has been set for June 5.

"Star Trek" opened in fewer venues than last week's "Wolverine" bow, which scored a $73.1 million opening on more than 9000 screens.
