A Critical Shortfall: Who Rates the Transmedia?

At least that was my thought this week when the top-ranked, highly competitive film schools at USC and UCLA collaborated on a conference on “transmedia,” the buzzwordy concept of creating related content for ardent fans across multiple media platforms to flesh out a particular story world or narrative universe (think Star Wars or Batman).
The conference mixed academics from two continents with the creative minds behind transmedia projects tied to “The Blair Witch Project,” “Harry Potter,” “Minority Report,” “The Dark Knight” and “2012” movies, the “Lost” TV series, the “Medal of Honor” videogames, Nine Inch Nail’s most recent album and more.

A good day, indeed, followed by a good week that left the Financial Times (source of the above quotes) and other news outlets slightly breathless about the sheer staggering magnitude of all the sales numbers.
Yes, but.
It’s true that Activision Blizzard can lay claim to media history’s biggest-ever opening day.
Kudos.

And DVD. And HDD. Oh, and of course for Thee (this last a sop to all you literary traditionalists out there).
The news of the last couple of weeks suggests that a long-brewing shift in how we consume our movies, TV shows, music, books, magazines, newspapers and other media is about to speed up, a lot, thanks to several very big kicks in the keister.
What’s it all mean? To start, I’d sell off that optical-disc duping factory if I were you. And you may want to get out of the hard-drive and home networked-storage businesses, too. They’re on the way to buggy-whip status and fast.
All of a sudden, we’re moving a lot more quickly to a world where most of our media content will be sitting...
