Disney will release the thriller "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" under its Miramax banner on January 21, 2011, the studio announced on Monday.

Guillermo del Toro and Mark Johnson produce the creature feature, which Troy Nixey directs from a script by del Toro and Matthew Robbins.

Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce star alongside Bailee Madison ("Brothers"), Jack Thompson and Alan Dale ("Lost").

Madison plays a young girl who is sent to live with her father (Pearce) and his girlfriend (Holmes) in an old mansion they're renovating, where she accidentally unleashes malevolent creatures who want to claim her as one of their own.

The film is a remake of John Newland's 1973 TV movie.

While there are no other movies currently scheduled to open on Jan. 21, the date seems to indicate that Disney expects MGM's creature feature "Cabin in the Woods" to move from its scheduled release date of January 14, 2011 as a result of the latter studio's financial troubles.
