DreamWorks Animation has hired Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons to write a "Penguins of Madagascar" movie, TheWrap has confirmed.

The writers worked with the company on the 2010 "Megamind."

It's early in the project's life: there's no director, no release date, no story.

But the penguins are popular. The "Penguins of Madagascar" is in its second season on Nickelodean, and it's the No. 2-rated show on all of television for kids 2-11.

Meanwhile, the third installment of the "Madagascar" CG-animated series opens on June 8, 2012. The first two "Madagascar" movies have grossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

News of the spinoff first appeared in The Hollywood Reporter.
