Universal is dreaming a dream of Hugh Jackman.

The Australian actor, whom the studio wanted for its "Snow White and the Huntsman," is in talks with the studio to star in a film version of "Les Miserables," TheWrap has confirmed.

One good reason for him to take the part: Tom Hooper.

The director of last year's "The King's Speech" is adapting the musical version of Victor Hugo's novel.

Jackman has Broadway credibility. He hosted the Tony Awards three times and played Peter Allen in "The Boy From Oz."

It's not clear whether Jackman would play Jean Valjean, the hero, or javert, the police inspector who's after him.

Cameron Mackintosh will produce with Working Title Films' Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

William Nicholson is writing the script.

Variety first reported the news.
