Ruairi Robinson's feature directorial debut co-stars Elias Koteas, Romola Garai, Olivia Williams and Tom Cullen
Magnolia Pictures' genre arm Magnet Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to Ruairi Robinson's feature directorial debut "The Last Days on Mars" from Focus Features International.
Magnet is eyeing a release through its Ultra VOD program later this year.
Michael Kuhn and Andrea Cornwell produced the movie, which follows an astronaut who finds fossilized evidence of bacterial life on Mars. Disobeying orders, he goes on an unauthorized expedition to collect further samples and winds up falling into a deep crevice. His colleagues attempt to recover his body but when another vanishes, they start to suspect that the life-form they've discovered is not yet dead.
Focus Features International handled worldwide sales on the film, which bowed at Cannes earlier this year.
“With a terrific ensemble cast and top-notch production values, 'The Last Days on Mars' is an exceedingly well-made and frightening science fiction film that will be a real pleasure for fans of the genre,” said Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles. “Ruairi Robinson is a talented director to watch — we're very excited to be working with him on this film.”
Robinson is an Oscar-nominated director of several celebrated sci-fi short films and animations.
Deal was negotiated by Magnolia/Magnet senior VP of acquisitions Dori Begley and director of acquisitions Peter Van Steemburg with Focus Features International.
