Honest -- Screen Media has acquired U.S. distribution rights to "The Lie," a dark comedy directed by, written by and starring Joshua Leonard, the company announced Thursday.

The movie is based on a T.C.Boyle short story that originally was published in the "New Yorker." In the story, a man tells a fib in order to get out of work. That lie ultimately changes the course of his life.

Leonard plays Lonnie, the man who calls in sick one day. Jess Weixler plays his wife.

Mark Webber ("Scott Pilgrim vs. The World") also stars.

Mary Pat Bentel serves as producer.

Leonard made his name in the 1999 "Blair Witch Project" and has appeared in HBO's "Hung" and Showtime's "United States of Tara."

He co-stars with Vera Farmiga in the upcoming "Higher Ground," which Farmiga also directed. Leonard recently completed filming "The Motel Life" opposite Emile Hirsch and Kris Kristofferson.

"The Lie" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
