Columbia Pictures is in final discussions to acquire the rights to the novel "Q" on behalf of writer/director David Gordon Green and producer Matt Tolmach, the studio announced on Monday.

The  Evan Mandery novel centers on a man who is visited by a future version of himself, and told not to marry the love of his life. He agrees and spends the rest of his life trying to undo that decision and to reunite with the woman he loves.

Tolmach and Gordon Green collaborated on the Sony's 2008 hit "Pineapple Express." Before veering into comedies, Gordon Green was best known for critically acclaimed indies such as "Undertow" and "All the Real Girls."

Pouya Shahbazian, who manages Mandery, will produce the film with Tolmach. The book was discovered by Matt Tolmach Productions executives Robert Kessel and Kate Checci, who will also work on developing the project. Andrea Giannetti is overseeing "Q" for Columbia Pictures along with Hannah Minghella.
