The Weinstein Company has acquired U.S. distribution rights to "Coriolanus," actor Ralph Fiennes' directorial debut, the company announced Friday.
The world premiere of the film, based on the Shakespeare play, is set for Monday at the Berlin International Film Festival.
The deal also gives the Weinstein pan-Asian pay TV rights.
In a written statement, TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said, “My brother’s and my relationship with Ralph stretches back many years and includes two of our most cherished productions, 'The English Patient' and 'The Reader.' He’s a brilliant artist, and we are honored and delighted to partner with him in bringing 'Coriolanus' to American moviegoers.”
Fiennes, the "Harry Potter," "Hurt Locker" and "Clash of the Titans" star has the role of Caius Martius Coriolanus. Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Cox, Jessica Chastain and James Nesbitt also star In the modern interpretation of Shakespeare's play.
The movie was produced by Ralph Fiennes; Julia Taylor-Stanley for Artemis Films; Gabrielle Tana for Magnolia Mae Films; and Colin Vaines for Synchronistic Inc. It was adapted for the screen by John Logan, ("Sweeney Todd," "The Aviator," "Gladiator"). It is being distributed in the U.K. by Lionsgate UK.
