May, 19, 2012 5:45 pm | Comments On #Cannes, Cannes 2012, lawless, Megan Ellison, Michael Benaroya, MoviesIt’s 10 p.m. along the Croisette at the afterparty for “Lawless,” and a new side of Cannes is revealing itself.
It’s not the star-studded Armani-Chopard-Haiti benefit on Friday night, where $100,000 at auction bought you three days in Haiti with Sean Penn.
And it’s not the exclusive A-list gathering at the Hotel du Cap down the coast, where Graydon Carter of Vanity Fair is having his annual affair.
It’s a different kind of party and a different kind of exclusive, where a new blend of filmmakers, stars and high net worth producers is gathering to celebrate the premiere of John Hillcoat’s “Lawless.”
Who’s here? The people up to their elbows in making the movies that you’re likely to care about. Most are barely over 30. Everybody's smoking, and very good looking.

May, 19, 2012 9:02 am | Comments On #Cannes, cannes film festival, Haiti, Laurence Anyways, Megan Ellison, Movies, Once Upon a Time in America, sean penn, Sergio Leone, Xavier DolanA few hours after berating the world for abandoning Haiti, Sean Penn put some other people's money where his mouth is at Cannes. He, director Paul Haggis, model Petra Nemcova and designer Giorgio Armani hosted a black-tie fundraiser for Haiti, raising more than $1 million by auctioning off everything from tickets to the Golden Globes to a guitar autographed by Bono.
The dinner was a rare Cannes charity event not tied to a film in the festival. The AP's Jake Coyle reports that Penn, who managed to make black tie look casual, greeted his guests by explaining why he was hosting the event: "Because once upon a time I was ashamed of myself, more than I am today - as I think you should be."

May, 19, 2012 5:25 am | Comments On #Cannes, John Hillcoat, lawless, Movies, Tom HardyThe violence is kept onscreen in John Hillcoat's “Lawless.” He never shies away from it, which i
s really one of the key things you need to make a good movie about gangsters in lawless times in America.
The other thing you need is a good shootout. The movie succeeds beautifully on one of these counts. The other, though, muddies what might have been a much more intense showdown. Still, you can always be sure of one thing: There will be blood.
But that is really the film's only major weakness, and perhaps it can be forgiven for the good that it does offer, namely the performances -- Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Shia Labeouf, Mia...

May, 18, 2012 5:31 pm | Comments On #Beasts of the Southern Wild, Benh Zeitlin, Beyond the Hills, Cannes, cannes film festival, Cristian Mungiu, film festivals, Movies, Quvenzhané WallisRecently, a petition was circulated that upwards of 1,200 people have already signed, taking the Cannes Film Festival to task for not including any films by women directors in the main competition category. This omission offended me, too, until I started seeing some of the films that were included.

Lo and behold, the rarest of all things: movies about women that didn't have anything to do with the men they were sleeping with or marrying. All but one of the films I've seen so far in competition have had strong female storylines, and the one that hasn't still had many well-drawn female supporting players.
