At Last, CBS Films Generates Some Heat

March, 18, 2010 5:28 pm | On #beastly, CBS Films, Faster, Movies, ShoWest

CBS Films entered its big day at ShoWest Thursday with one underperforming drama under its belt ("Extraordinary Measures").

So what came next? There was applause, but no incendiary buzz, after the new film company conducted a morning screening of its new romantic comedy "The Back-Up Plan" starring Jennifer Lopez... and TV star Alex O'Laughlin.

Lopez stars as a man-weary woman who gives up on romance and opts for artificial insemination. Just pregnant, she falls in love with a cheese-maker (O'Laughlin) on her way out of the fertility clinic. The movie has some decent chemistry, but it felt, at least to some, more like a sitcom pitched at the big screen.

The momentum picked up dramatically at the division's noontime luncheon, when CBS Films president and CEO Amy Baer rolled out an upcoming slate that included summer sci-fi youth drama...

Celery Much? WaxWord Forages for (Fresh) Food at ShoWest 2010

March, 18, 2010 3:31 pm | On #concessions, michael lynton, Movies, ShoWest 2010

Your intrepid Wrap editor hunted around on the convention floor at ShoWest 2010 in Las Vegas to see if there's any chance in hell the exhibitors will give up their 1000% profit ratio in selling popcorn in favor of healthier, fresh food. Obesity, people!

Michael Lynton, the co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, boldly suggested this path on Monday. Problem is, he's not in control of the concessions stand.

Here's what people had to say:

Technicolor's Pitch at ShoWest: Don't Have Cash for Digital 3D? Use Us

March, 18, 2010 9:09 am | On #3D, conversion, Movies, ShoWest, Technicolor

The bulk of 18 3D movies announced for 2010 still to come, and screens to accommodate that rush are short. Funding for digital cinema retrofitting is limited, so suppliers of inexpensive 3D add-on products are being pushing exhibitors hard at ShoWest this year.

Their message: Use our cheaper solution until you have the more than $100,000 per screen to go digital.

On Wednesday, Technicolor packed Bally’s Jubilee Theater to show off its new 3D system that merely requires that exhibitors add on a module to their standard 35mm projectors.

Company officials said they now have 150 screens across North America using this system, in the run-up to the March 26 bow of the Paramount/DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon” and the April 2 debut of Warner’s “Clash of the Titans,” both of which will compete for a limited number of 3D...

Overbooked Screenings Rile ShoWest Delegates

March, 18, 2010 12:13 am | On #Movies, screenings, ShoWest

It was another day of standing ovations at ShoWest screenings Wednesday, with the Paris Hotel's Les Theatre des Arts once again packed full for showings of Sony's "The Karate Kid" and Lionsgate's "Kick Ass."

But while screenings of these much-anticipated films did nothing to slow the sizable momentum the projects had coming into ShoWest, a number of registered delegates to the conference weren't at all happy about having to share the huge, yet fully subcribed theater with members of the general Las Vegas public, many of whom were let in by ShoWest officials ahead of paid registrants for "Kick Ass."

"We're paying over $1,200 for this conference," said one East Coast theater booker to TheWrap. "There's two of us, so you factor in $1,000 for a room and $1,200 for air fare, and you're talking about $5,000 to come here and get...

Cantor Exchange 'Practice Trading' Results Are in

March, 17, 2010 11:08 am | On #Cantor Exchange, Movies, ShoWest

It's still more than a month away from live trading, you can sort of see why the Cantor Exchange movie futures trading system is stirring discomfort among studio executives.

A demo of the new system on the ShoWest floor Wednesday already had the expected four-week performance of this weekend's wide-opening new releases, based on "practice trading" currently being performed by several thousand users who have already registered for the service.

The line on Sony's "Bounty Hunter" has set by Canter Exchange traders at $64 million after four weeks of domestic release. For Fox's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," the "over/under" is $45.5 million. It's $39.5 million for Universal's "Repo Men."

The system won't go live until April 22...

'Toy Story 3,' 'Letters to Juliet' Get Standing O's

March, 16, 2010 10:18 pm | On #letters to juliet, Movies, ShoWest, Toy Story 3

It's not Cannes or Sundance, but Disney and Summit both generated some pretty nice pre-release buzz at ShoWest in Las Vegas Monday.

Presenting the upcoming "Toy Story 3" in its non-native 2D format, Disney packed two giant theaters at morning screenings at the Paris and Bellagio hotels, with one exiting theater-chain operative noting, "This wasn't the best animated movie of the year, it was the best movie."

Later, Summit's Amanda Seyfried romantic comedy-drama "Letters to Juliet" drew a standing ovation, with an executive for Northern California-based Prime Cinemas enthusiastically noting, "This is going to single-handedly revive the romantic comedy genre."

Besides engaging in movie criticism, the threat of shrinking theatrical release windows -- as it usually is at ShoWest -- was very much on the minds of theater...

NATO's Fithian: Let's Be Flexible on Windows

March, 16, 2010 12:00 pm | On #adam fogelson, John Fithian, Movies, ShoWest, windows

Disagreements may have cropped up over the menu selection at concession stands, but studios and theater business continued to strike a cooperative, pragmatic tone regarding often incendiary topic of release windows at ShoWest.

In his conference address Tuesday, NATO president and CEO John Fithian told attendees to expect more release scenarios like “Alice in Wonderland,” for which Disney asked exhibitors for a shortened 12-week release window.

In an abrupt departure from some of his previous ShoWest speeches, Fithian added that the exhibition industry will be fine with that.

“Some recent industry conversations related to windows have been misinterpreted,” he said. “Individual distribution and exhibition executives have discussed some additional flexibility on a very limited number of movies where theatrical sales and home video sales...

MPAA's Glickman at ShoWest: 'I Got My Hollywood Ending'

March, 16, 2010 10:34 am | On #dan glickman, Movies, MPAA, people, ShoWest

In his final major address as chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, Chairman and CEO Dan Glickman Tuesday told exhibitors at ShoWest, "I got my Hollywood ending," adding, "If I could leave this community with one piece of advice, it is never forget our power to change people’s lives and, in doing so, to change the world.”

He also gave a bit of musical advice.Dan Glickman MPAA

"One of the highlights these past six years has been joining you at ShoWest to celebrate this great American industry and the partnership between moviemakers and theater owners that’s at its heart," he told exhibitors. "I can’t help but think of the old Sinatra song:

"Love and marriage, love and...

Sony's Lynton to Theaters: Mix in a Salad

March, 15, 2010 1:49 pm | On #concessions, Food, healthier, michael lynton, Movies, ShoWest, snacks

Sony Pictures chief Michael Lynton fired a shot across the large-margin concessions bow of theater chains Monday, asking exhibitors to add healthier food options at the box office.

Delivering his remarks at the ShoWest convention in Las Vegas, Lynton cited skyrocketing childhood obesity rates before noting, “adding healthier options to your existing menu is the right thing to do for our industry, for audiences and for our country.”

Lynton said his studio conducted a poll of moviegoers that revealed that two-thirds of them would prefer something healthier than candy, popcorn and soda. According to the research, 42 percent of parents said they'd by more food at the theater if there were healthier options.

Lynton added that he's not...
