The female-skewing CW will seek more male viewers this season with darker shows including "Arrow" and the midseason show "The Cult," network president Mark Pedowitz said Monday.

That doesn't mean viewers will overdose on testosterone. The network is also developing female-centric comedies -- and promises another "Muppets" special following the success of one last season.

CW's 'Arrow' to Remain A Liberal Superhero

July, 30, 2012 10:36 am | Comments On #Arrow, green arrow, liberal, Oliver Queen, stephen amell, Television

DC Comics' Green Arrow is one of the most decidedly liberal superheroes, and his move to television won't change that.

The archer with the secret identity of billionaire Oliver Queen comes to the CW this fall on "Arrow." (He's losing the "Green" because it sounds too comic-booky.)

The move to the broader audience won't be the end of Oliver Queen's progressive, populist approach to vigilantism, the creators of the series told a Television Critics Association panel.

"Since the people that Oliver is targeting are the wealthy and the corrupt, there are some echoes of the One Percenters and Occupy Wall Street within the show," said executive...

CBS Chief Enlists Stuffed Monkey to Ding Rivals

July, 29, 2012 10:22 am | Comments On #CBS, elementary, How I Met Your Mother, NBC, nina tassler, Television, Vegas

CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler enlisted a stuffed monkey to take a few jabs at her networks' rivals at a Television Critics Association panel Sunday.

Getty ImagesShe walked onstage with the monkey -- wearing a "How I Met Your Mother" tie -- as a dig at NBC's "Animal Practice." NBC's show brought the monkey onstage at a TCA panel earlier this week.

Tassler (with another animal friend, left) noted it had been an oddity-filled TCA: It has included appearances by the monkey and Sarah Palin. Fox chief Kevin Reilly, meanwhile, announced Mariah Carey as the new "American Idol" judge by calling her on his cell phone....

FX, famous for giving creative freedom to its shows, asked Louis C.K. to make changes to an episode of "Louie" called "God" to avoid offending Catholics.

Network president John Landgraf talked about the decision during a Television Critics Association panel on Saturday. He is known for letting his shows push boundaries: The last season of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," for example, featured a mock funeral for a baby.

Russell Brand Explains Sarah Palin: 'People Want to F--- Her'

July, 28, 2012 10:57 am | Comments On #brand x, Russell Brand, Television

A barefoot Russell Brand explained to critics Saturday how his talk show, "Brand X," will soon become more conventional.

Getty ImagesBut not too conventional. He ended a panel at the Television Critics Association on Saturday by explaining what he believes is Sarah Palin's appeal: "People want to fuck her. That's why they tolerate the other stuff."

But first, about the lack of shoes.

Brand has sold himself as a fast-talking, free-associating, antiestablishment force in show business, and dressed the part for the panel. He wore ripped jeans, beads, and some kind of leather strap on his bicep. His hair, beard and stare suggested a more...

Martin Sheen Does Brando's 'Apocalypse Now' Speech on 'Anger Management' (Video)

July, 28, 2012 9:37 am | Comments On #Apocalypse Now, Charlie Sheen, Kurtz, Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Television, TV video

FX offered critics a preview of Martin Sheen's upcoming turn on his son's "Anger Management," in which he recreates part of Marlon Brando's "are you an assassin?" speech from "Apocalypse Now."

Martin Sheen co-starred in the film, and brought a young Charlie Sheen to the Phillipines, where it was filmed. Charlie Sheen said at a panel of the Television Critics Association summer press tour that he still considers it "the greatest movie ever made."

"Apocalypse Me," was Charlie Sheen's title for a planned autobiography, but he says he has "shitcanned" plans to write it.

FX has ordered a fourth series of Louis C.K.'s "Louie," and "Anger Management" appears likely to receive an order for another 90 episodes, FX said Saturday. If "Anger Management" is extended, Martin Sheen will join the cast playing Martin Goodson, the father of Charlie Sheen's Charlie Goodson.

The network has also ordered the new drama "The Bridge," based on a Danish series of the same name, and ordered seven more episodes of Russell Brand's "Brand X," though the comedian's talk show is undergoing a retooling.

FX president John Landgraf made the announcements at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. He predicted a...
