'Star Trek Into Darkness' Can't Hit Warp Speed at Box Office
May, 19, 2013 8:48 am | Comments On #box office, Movies, Star Trek Into Darkness“Star Trek Into Darkness” zoomed to $84 million in its North American debut this weekend and knocked “Iron Man 3” out of the top spot, but couldn’t ascend to box-office hyper-space.
J.J. Abrams space epic sequel’s opening was the year’s third-best, but its $70.5 million three-day total was less than the $75 million that “Star Trek” debuted to four years ago. And its four-day total was well short of the $100 million that Paramount, Skydance Pictures and Abrams' Bad Robot Productions had hoped to bring in.
“Into Darkness” opened in 33 foreign markets as well this weekend, and the $40 million that the film brought in took some of the sting out of the domestic results. It has taken in more than $80 million from overseas, and $164.5 million worldwide.
“The good news is, when you have a really...

He did get the chance to apologize to his wife Jennifer Garner for that odd acceptance speech he gave after winning the Oscar for "Argo." He explains it all to her in his opening monologe here. You decide if it "works."

May, 18, 2013 8:46 am | Comments On #box office, Great Gatsby, Iron Man, Movies, Star Trek Into Darkness"Star Trek Into Darkness" cruised to more than $21 million at the box office on Friday and J.J Abrams’ space epic sequel is on pace for an extended weekend total of around $80 million.
That's big, but on the low end of analysts' expectations and under the $100 million that distributor Paramount had hoped to see. Saturday and Sunday will be critical, and the film received an "A" CinemaScore from first-night audiences, so word of mouth should be strong.
"Star Trek Into Darkness" has rolled up nearly $39 million since opening in 336 Imax theaters on Wednesday and in 3,672 locations nationwide on Thursday. A Friday-through-Sunday total in the $60 million range looks likely, which would be less than the $75 million that the franchise reboot "Star Trek" debuted with in 2009.

That figure beats the $3.6 million that the fourth film in the franchise, "Fast & Furious," opened with in 2009 and is the year's second-best opening day in the U.K., just behind the $4.7 million of "Iron Man 3."
Warner Bros. rolled out "The Great Gatsby" on Thursday in the U.K., and that film has taken in $2.5 million.

Abrams' Grand Ambitions: J.J. Abrams likes to go big or go home. But due to the "Star Trek" licensing and merchandising rights being split between CBS and Paramount, the multihyphenate wasn't allowed to go as big as he wanted to in 2009. Since Disney owns all the rights to "Star Wars," Abrams shouldn't have a problem turning his vision into a multi-platform experience reality that spans television, digital entertainment and comic books.
