"Melancholia": Lars von Trier is no stranger to Cannes, having picked up the Palme d'Or for "Dancer in the Dark" in 2000. The Danish auteur returns this season with the sci-fi drama "Melancholia," starring Kirsten Dunst. Sure to be provocative.
"This Must Be the Place": Sean Penn stars as a rocker out to avenge his father, who was tortured in Auschwitz. Paolo Sorrentino ("Il Divo") directs the decidedly off-beat sounding film. Think of it as "Point Blank" meets the Cure.
"The Skin I Live In": Antonio Banderas and Pedro Almodovar reunite more than 20 years since they last teamed up. The thriller centers on a surgeon who creates a new skin for his wife in order to save her life.
"Midnight in Paris": Woody Allen gets the opening night slot with this, his latest love letter to European cities and portrait of a writer (Owen Wilson) with romantic problems.
"The Tree of Life": Brad Pitt. Terrence Malick. Dinosaurs. Attention must be paid.
"The Artist": Michel Hazanavicius' black-and-white period comedy boasts a mixture of French actors and beloved American character actors such as James Cromwell and John Goodman.
"We Need to Talk About Kevin": Tilda Swinton stars as a mother grappling with her son's role in a school shooting. Cheery, it is not.
"The Beloved": The perpetually youthful Catherine Deneuve stars in this pan-European romantic comedy from director Christophe Honoré ("Love Songs").
"Restless": The Gus Van Sant relationship drama kicks off the festival's Un Certain Regard section and stars the winsome Mia Wasikowska. Van Sant is a Cannes favorite, having already earned the Palme d'Or in 2003 for "Elephant."
"Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai": A little less high-brow sounding than some of the other artsy fare hitting the Riviera, this Takashi Miike-directed remake of the Masaki Kobayashi film, "Harakiri" does offer samurais, swords and 3D.
There will be plenty of international star power on display at the 64th annual Cannes Film Festival. Among the heavyweights making the pilgrimage to the south of France are Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Antonio Banderas, Woody Allen and Tilda Swinton.
