‘Rio’ Gives Slumping Foreign Box Office a Lift With $55M Weekend

Fox 3D CG film brings a little color to an international market that’s down 23 percent so far this year

Think things are bad for the movie business Stateside? Business is just as slow internationally, where the market is down 23 percent year to year.

But the foreign market received a little happy news this weekend, with the premiere of Fox’s “Rio” in 11,612 locations worldwide.

The 3D family film grossed $55 million internationally over the weekend, accoring to its studio, the biggest start at home or abroad this year (the film opens up in North America next weekend).
