MTV Scores Biggest Ratings in 8 Years With VMAs

This year’s Video Music Awards were the networks highest-rated telecast since the 2002 ceremony

Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards telecast was up over 27 percent from last year, bringing the network its highest-rated telecast since Aug. 2002.

The VMA's, which were hosted by comedienne Chelsea Handler, averaged 11.4 million total viewers, making it MTVs most-watched show since the 2002 Video Music Awards. Sunday's was the network's third most-watched telecast ever.

The 2010 VMAs currently ranks as the top cable telecast of 2010 followed by another MTV hit — “Jersey Shore.”

Van Toffler, president of the MTV Networks music & Logo Group said the network was gratified by the warm reception the 2010 VMAs received from audiences.

“Every year, MTV celebrates the music and creative genius of artists we have the privilege of working with all year long … Last night's luminescent VMA setting provided the perfect backdrop to do just that and we're thrilled the audience resoundingly agreed," Toffler said.

MTV debuted in 1981. The first Video Music Awards were held three years later.
