Rapping from within a pyramid, Kanye West says he doesn't need to humanize himself, because he's human
Kanye West is the musical guest on the "Saturday Night Live" season finale this weekend, but don't look for him to try to "humanize" himself with any skits.
Performing from within a giant pyramid that separated him from his audience, West performed at Adult Swim's upfront presentation to advertisers at Roseland Ballroom in New York City on Wednesday night. At one point he went on a long tirade about the fact that he is not a celebrity. Fortunately for all of us, ComplexMusic posted video.
Here are some of the highlights:
"One thing about me. I'm the worst kinda, worst kinda, worst kinda celebrity…because all I do is make real music. All I do is sit in the studio and make real, real s—. and that's it. That's motherf—ing it. … So I don't want nobody trying to run up on me with no cameras, trying to sell pictures and s— to magazines, asking me no dumbass questions. Throwing me off of my focus and s—. Harassing you all motherf—ing day.
Kanye has had some very public bouts with street signs and Lamborghini navigation recently. That probably hasn't helped his attitude — but he will not be looking back at the incidents and laughing — at least not this weekend.
West said, "[I had a friend ask me, 'Are you gonna go on] 'SNL' and you're going to do like a skit about the paparazzi and shit and like humanize yourself?' I ain't here to apologize to no motherf—ers man. It ain't about me humanizing myself. At what point did I become unhuman where I had to turn myself back? Or maybe I was demonized. Or maybe I was treated inhumane and not human in that kind of situation."
West also performed a string of hits from "Power" to "Can't Tell Me Nothing," ending with a very long version of "Runaway" and a declaration of love for the audience. Though the pyramid's screens — which displayed visuals like fluttering crows — prevented the crowd from seeing him for parts of the show, he did come out to high-five a few people in the front row. But his rant was what drew the most attention the next morning. Here's some more of it:
"I ain't no motherf—ing celebrity. I ain't running for office. I ain't kissing nobody's motherf—ing babies. I drop your baby and you sue me and s—. I'm trying to make some music that inspires people to be the best they can be. I don't want nobody to ask nothing else of me. Don't ask nothing else of me. Motherf—ers chasing you down 'bout to make you crash and shit. And all they want is one n—- to laugh and shit. Hell nah I ain't doing no motherf—ing 'SNL' skits, this my goddamn life. This ain't no motherf—ing joke. That's it. Stop that shit right there."
