NBC’s ‘Constantine’ Casts Mexican-American Star as Zed

TCA 2014: Angelica Celaya books the coveted Hellblazer/DC Comics role

NBC’s “Constantine” is bringing Zed into the fold.

Angelica Celaya will play the character from the Hellblazer/DC Comic series. Zed is described as a lover (and foil) of Constantine’s (Matt Ryan). She is the wayward daughter of an evangelical family, who is also an artist.

Celaya joins after the production parted ways with Lucy Griffiths, who played Liv, a young girl who gains sight of the demonic world. The casting changes were made to increase conflict in the series.

“Zed can walk up to Constantine and have a different opinion, where as Liv doesn’t know anything about this world, can’t take care of herself,” executive producer Daniel Cerone told TheWrap during Sunday’s Television Critics Association press tour.

He continued, “Zed has a little more smarts, has a little more wherewithal, by design, she’s more assured. She comes from a very, very dark background. Even down to the love interest at the end of the day. Zed is the first character in the Hellblazer comics whom Constantine gets romantically or sexually involved with.

Represented by Innovative and DePaz Management, Celaya is best known for starring in Spanish telenovelas. She has also appeared on TNT’s “Dallas” and USA Network’s “Burn Notice.”

“Constantine” premieres on Friday, Oct. 26 at 10/9c.
