New York Mag Adds TV, Sports Blogs to Stable

The magazine may have shaved issues this summer, but it continues to grow its website.

New York magazine may have shaved some issues from its schedule this summer, but it continues to grow out its website.

The magazine announced a pair of new blog launches on Wednesday – one covering sports, the other television.

The Sports Section and Surf join New York magazine’s existing blogs: Daily Intel, entertainment and culture blog Vulture, restaurant-focused Grub Street and fashion via the Cut.

What’s worth noting here is that Will Leitch, the magazine’s contributing editor, founder and emeritus of Gawker sports blog Deadspin and well-known commodity in sports media circles, will edit the Sports Section.

Since the blog will cover the "sports scene in New York and beyond," it makes Leitch at least, in theory, a Deadspin competitor.

Emily Nussbaum, New York’s television critic and editor-at-large, will write Surf. That site will go live September 14.

HBO will be the launch sponsor of Surf (better cover True Blood thoroughly!) while Capital One is launch partner for the Sports Section.

NYmag.com – including its blogs — currently attracts about 5.5 million unique visitors a month. Deadspin, by comparison, gets about 1.3 million, according to Quantcast.

[Full disclosure: I have written for New York magazine’s website, and cover tennis for Deadspin.]
