Next Issue, ‘Netflix for Magazines,’ App Comes to iPad

The app, which was released Tuesday, brings 39 magazine titles to the tablet

Next Issue Media, a joint venture among several big publishing houses, was released Tuesday as an iPad app, bringing its 39 magazine titles to the market-leading tablet.

The service, which launched three months ago on Android, allows users to pay a flat monthly fee for access to publications that include Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and Esquire.

The company was started up in 2009 when Conde Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corp. and Time Inc. joined forces to create a newsstand to compete with Apple's publishing services.

Dubbed by some the "Netflix of magazines," Next Issue's iPad launch will likely test the viability of an all-you-can-read service for tablets.

Users can have Unlimited Basic service for $9.99 a month, giving them access to all monthly and biweekly magazines. Unlimited Premium costs $14.99 a month and adds weekly titles including Sports Illustrated and The New Yorker. Single magazine subscriptions range from $1.99 to $5.99 monthly and single issues go from $2.49 to $5.99.
