Jan. 1 outdoor ice hockey game will pit Pittsburgh Penguins against Washington Capitals

The Pittsburgh Penguins will play the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League’s annual Winter Classic, to be held New Year’s Day at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement Friday at his annual Stanley Cup press conference.

NBC Sports will broadcast the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic from the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers at 1 p.m. ET on Jan. 1.

The first three NHL Winter Classics — ice hockey games played at outdoor sports arenas — have averaged 4 million viewers on NBC Sports. The 2010 game was held at Boston’s Fenway Park.
