“Vampire Diaries” actress to join Ellen Page and Diego Luna in update of Julia Roberts thriller

Nina Dobrev Flatliners

Nina Dobrev is in talks with Sony Pictures to join some other pretty young things in the studio’s update on “Flatliners.”

The former “Vampire Diaries” lead is in final negotiations to join Ellen Page and Diego Luna in the thriller, an individual close to the deal told TheWrap.

The film follows a group of edgy and brainy students who induce death to travel to the afterlife — while their peers roll the dice on bringing them back to the land of the living.

Niels Arden Oplev (“Mr. Robot,” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) will direct from a script by Ben Ripley (“Source Code”). Laurence Mark (“I, Robot”) will produce with Michael Douglas. Production is slated to start in early July.

The cast of the new “Flatliners” movie is expected be more inclusive and international than Joel Schumacher‘s original 1990 thriller, which starred Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt. This time around, the core cast will feature three women and two men.
