James Gandolfini is a stickler for appropriate dinner dress in the new trailer for "Not Fade Away."
The new film from "Sopranos" creator David Chase looks to deliver some choice lines, including one from Gandolfini about the consequences of not wearing a tie to dinner.
"The Sopranos" creator is back in his New Jersey milieu, but instead of looking at wise guys, "Not Fade Away" follows a group of aspiring musicians trying to hit it big in the 1960s.
The film stars TV veterans Gandolfini and Brad Garrett ("Everybody Loves Raymond") as well as up-and-comers Bella Heathcote and Jack Huston. It received mixed reviews after premiering at the New York Film Festival last week.
The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney praised the film's shaggy structure and called it "a warm, funny, poignant scrapbook that evokes a spirit of youth still relatable in later eras."
But in Indie Wire, Rodrigo Perez faulted the picture for rehashing old ground.
"Chase tries to paint a wide canvas statement of the 1960s, but ultimately delivers a mostly conventional coming-of-age story with a lot of tangents and detours," he wrote. "In fact, one might say it feels at times like 'The Wonder Years' for teens by David Chase."
