Update, 6:00 P.M.: The National Transportation Safety Board has also apologized, saying:
"Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft.
The NTSB does not release or confirm the names of crewmembers or people involved in transportation accidents to the media. We work hard to ensure that only appropriate factual information regarding an investigation is released and deeply regret today's incident.
Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated."

Oakland's KTVU Channel 2 thought it had an exclusive on the names of the Asiana Flight 214 pilots. It didn't.
As reports came in that a third person involved in the San Francisco International Airport crash landing died, the Fox affiliate's noon newscast named four pilots: Captain Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, and Bang Ding Ow.

It should be apparent to anyone who can read — and especially anyone who says those names out loud — that an offensive prank was afoot. But anchor Tori Campbell read the names, said they had been confirmed by the NTSB, and moved on to something else.
Shortly thereafter, KTVU apologized on its site, but placed the blame on the NTSB, which it claims confirmed the names as accurate.
The station added: "The correct names of the pilots in the cockpit were Lee Gang-guk and Lee Jeong-Min."
