Oliver Stone, Davis Guggenheim Slated for Silverdocs Fest

Washington, DC documentary festival to screen “South of the Border,” “Freakonomics,” “Restrepo”

Oliver Stone’s controversial South American film “South of the Border,” the Afghanistan-set Sundance favorite “Restrepo” and Davis Guggenheim’s “Waiting for ‘Superman’” are among the films that will be presented at June’s Silverdocs Documentary Festival, one of the key annual showcases for nonfiction filmmaking.

The opening night attraction at the Washington, DC festival will be “Freakonomics,” a collaborative film that features contributions from noted documentary filmmakers Alex Gibney, Morgan Spurlock, Eugene Jarecki, Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing, and Seth Gordon.

The AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Documentary Festival will take place from June 21 through June 27 in and around Washington. Its 102 films, representing 54 countries, were chosen from more than 2,000 submissions.

The festival will also include a retrospective of films from Guggenheim honoree Frederick Wiseman; it runs concurrently with the International Documentary Conference.

Films will screen in five different sections: Sterling US Feature Competition, Sterling World Feature Competition, Sterling Short Film Competition, Silver Spectrum and Spotlight Programs.
