‘Oogieloves’ Sets Another Box Office Record: Biggest 2nd-Week Drop

After posting the worst box-office debut ever, "Oogieloves" is back in the record books with the largest second-week drop

“Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure” — the movie that a week ago posted the worst box office opening ever — has broken the record for the biggest second-week drop.

The toddler-targeting film from Kenn Viselman Presents was in 281 theaters over the weekend and took in $43,854, a $156 per-screen average. That gross represents a 90 percent drop from the $448,000 it took in over its debut on Labor Day weekend, when it set a new standard for futility with its $207 per screen average.

That second week drop is bigger than the tumble taken by the musical drama “Undiscovered" in 2006. "Undiscovered" fell off 86 percent when it took in $91,748 in its second weekend after opening with $676,048 on Aug. 26, according to Box Office Mojo.

For “Oogieloves,” which features colorful giant puppets and live-action, there was a bit of good news. It has crossed the $1 million mark, with an overall gross of $1,029,050.

Viselman, known for bringing “The Teletubbies” and “Thomas the Tank Engine” to American television, said after the opening weekend that the notoriety from the worst-ever box office debut could actually help it on DVD and video on demand.

Safe to say that theory isn't extending to its theatrical run.

Cloris Leachman, Toni Braxton, Christopher Lloyd, Cary Elwes and Chazz Palminteri appear in or do voice work in the film.
