Oprah Winfey told Harvard graduates they are above Washington gridlock and cable news feuding in a commencement speech in which she also addressed hitting a personal low as OWN struggled.
Winfrey said critics had declared OWN a failure about a year ago, when she was first asked to speak at Harvard. But she said the channel has improved, as she has maintained faith in herself.
She urged graduates not to give into negativity.
"We all know that we are better than the cynicism and the pessimism that is regurgitated throughout Washington and the 24-hour cable news cycle — not my channel, by the way," said the OWN CEO.
Speaking at Harvard's commencement, Winfrey said she shared a Type-A personality with Harvard students — "My personality is about as Harvard as they come" — and joked that she wanted to hide diplomas under the graduates' chairs, like she used to hide gifts for her audience.
Now get out there, Harvard grads — to go join the Washington gridlock and cable news feuding.
