"Braveheart" writer Randall Wallace will direct “The Conscientious Objector” for Walden Media, Walden confirmed to TheWrap.
The film tells the story of Desmond Doss, a medic during World War II and the first conscientious objector to win the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Drafted in 1942, the Seventh-day Adventist became a medic because he refused to carry a weapon into combat.
Wallace earned his lone Oscar nomination as a writer, penning the script for “Braveheart,” but his directing credits include “The Man in the Iron Mask,” “We Were Soldiers” and “Secretariat.” He wrote the first two but not the latter.
Aaron Schneider had previously been attached to direct.

Robert Schenkkan, a Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright and actor, wrote the script. His past screenwriting credits include episodes of “The Pacific” and the TV movie “Spartacus.”
Terry Benedict is producing, as are Bill Mechanic under his Pandemonium banner and David Permut for Permut Presentations. Steve Longi is co-producing for Permut. Walden CEO Michael Bostick and Evan Turner are overseeing the project for Walden.
