Oscars to Celebrate 75th Anniversary of ‘The Wizard of Oz’

“The Wizard of Oz,” a 1939 Best Picture nominee, will be honored during 86th annual Academy Awards, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced on Tuesday.

Details are slim, but the ceremony will recognize the musical’s 75th anniversary.

The classic fantasy film following a girl from Kansas down the Yellow Brick Road after being transported the magical land of Oz was nominated for six Oscars. Although it lost the Best Picture race to “Gone with the Wind,” the MGM production took home Oscars for Original Score and Song.

“We are delighted to celebrate the birthday of one of the most beloved movies of all time at this year’s Oscars,” Zadan and Meron said in a statement.

The Academy Awards, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, air live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 2.
