Oscilloscope Acquires Illicit Affair Saga ‘A Teacher’

Hannah Fidell directed the film, which stars Lindsay Burdge

Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired North American distributions rights to “A Teacher,” Hannah Fidell’s debut feature about a teacher who is having an affair with her student.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month and will screen at South by Southwest in March.

Oscilloscope plans to release the movie in theaters, on VOD and digital later this year, and will likely release it day-and-date on VOD and in theaters.

Fidell’s movie explores the gradual emotional unraveling of Diana (Lindsay Burdge), a young, attractive high school teacher. She has been sleeping with her student, Eric (Will Brittain), but begins to oscillate between extreme anxiety and insatiable lust for her younger sexual partner.

“’A Teacher’ is a remarkably assured debut, and demonstrates two immense new talents, one in front of and one behind the camer,” Oscilloscope’s David Laub and Dan Berger said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome the film into O-Scope’s ranks and present it to the world.”

Laub and Berger made the deal with ICM Partners, which was representing the film’s rights and also represents Fidell and Burdge. Fidell and Sherman produced the movie, the second Oscilooscope bought out of this year’s Sundance crop. It also acquired Andrew Dosunmu's “Mother of George.”
