OWN’s ‘Greenleaf’ Premiere Breaks Network Ratings Record

Megachurch drama draws 3 million viewers in first airing

The Oprah Winfrey Network original series “Greenleaf” broke a ratings record for the cable channel when it premiered on Tuesday night.

The series delivered 3 million viewers and a 2.2 rating in the women 25-54 demographic, making it the No. 1 series debut in network history.

A new original drama series from writer-producer Craig Wright and executive producers Oprah Winfrey and Clement Virgo, “Greenleaf” takes viewers into the world of the Greenleaf family and their Memphis megachurch, where secrets and lies are as numerous as the faithful.

The show stars Merle Dandridge, Keith David, Lynn Whitfield, Kim Hawthorne and Lamman Rucker. Winfrey also appears in a recurring role. “Greenleaf” is produced for OWN by Lionsgate.

In addition, the season premiere of the Tyler Perry drama “The Haves and the Have Nots” delivered 2.9 million viewers and a 2.1 rating in the women 25-54 demo. The episode built in every quarter hour, climbing 18 percent from beginning to end.

Perry’s series portrays the ongoing drama between the wealthy Cryer and Harrington families and the poor Young family. It stars John Schneider and Tika Sumpter. “The Haves and the Have Nots” is created, written, directed and executive produced by Tyler Perry and produced for OWN by Tyler Perry Studios.
