Ratings: ‘CBS This Morning’ Gets Rough Start; ‘GMA’ Gains on ‘Today’

ABC’s morning offering closes in on top-rated NBC show in key demo and total viewers

"CBS This Morning" is still looking for its rise-and-shine moment.

Ratings for the week of Jan. 9 are in, and they bring some troubling news for the CBS' recently revamped morning show. "CBS This Morning" — which is anchored by Charlie Rose, Erica Hill and Gayle King and premiered Jan. 9 — was down 12 percent in the key demo of adults 25-54 versus the same period last year in its first week on air, averaging a 2.0/8 in the demo. The show averaged 2.7 million total viewers, which is also down — 10 percent, specifically — from the same period last year.

NBC's a.m. mainstay "Today" took a predictable win for the week, drawing a 4.2/15 in the key demo. The 60-year-old morning-TV institution drew an average 5.5 million total viewers and 2.4 million of them falling into the adults 25-54 category for the week.

ABC's "Good Morning America" found itself in familiar territory — second place — with an average 3.6/13 in the key demo and 4.8 million total viewers.

The encouraging news for "GMA" is that it's the only one of the three to post gains this season, with a 10 percent uptick in the demo and 8 percent growth in total viewership. For the time being anyway, it's gaining on "Today" versus the same period last year. "GMA" narrowed its gap against "Today" by 40 percent in the key demo, and 39 percent in total viewer. The total viewer margin between "GMA" and "Today" shrank to 563,000 — the narrowest margin since the 1995-96 season.
