CNN Wins Primetime in Key News Demo With Zimmerman Exclusives

"Piers Morgan Live" hits series high for interview episodes in key news demo

The George Zimmerman trial might be over, but it's still providing big numbers for CNN.

CNN won primetime among the cable news networks in the key news demo on Monday night, thanks to Anderson Cooper's interview with an unnamed juror on the Zimmerman trial, and Piers Morgan's interview with trial witness Rachel Jeantel, who was on the phone with Trayvon Martin just before he was fatally shot.

CNN took first place in the key 25-54 news demographic during Monday night primetime with an average 576,000 viewers in the demo, compared to 415,000 for Fox News Network and 233,000 for MSNBC.

In total viewers, CNN was second, averaging 1.199 million compared to Fox's 2.153 million.

CNN's numbers Monday night represent a 142 percent demo boost compared to the previous Monday's primetime, and a 77 percent jump in total viewers.

The numbers are particularly impressive, given that the network was unable to do much promotion due to the last-minute scheduling of the interviews.

"Anderson Cooper 360" at 8 p.m., which featured the juror interview, nearly tied "The O'Reilly Factor" in the demo, with 474,000 viewers 25-54 — a 131 percent jump over the previous week — compared to 478,000 for O'Reilly (In total viewers, however,O'Reilly had 2.859 million, compared to 961,000 for Cooper.)

The "Piers Morgan Live" interview with Jeantel gave the series its best demo ratings on record for an interview episode, drawing 678,000 viewers in the demo — the best performance in the demo for Monday's primetime, and a 199 percent jump from the previous Monday. In total viewers, Morgan came in second with 1.378 million — a 100 percent increase over the Monday before.
